On March 16, Special Olympics International (SOI) announced plans to cancel all in-person Special Olympics events through May 31, 2020, at which point the situation will be reassessed and guidance updated. Special Olympics North Carolina will comply with SOI’s request.
Unfortunately, this news means that the 2020 SONC Summer Games scheduled for May 29-31, 2020 are cancelled. Rescheduling Summer Games to later in the year is not possible given the complexity of organizing the event and the fact that future coronavirus cancellations may be extended beyond May.
But Civitans can continue to support SONC! You can mail your checks into NCDE Treasurer, Marlene Jewell at 113 Equestrian Chase, Rougemont, NC 27572 Or, during the month of May, you can join the Keep the Hope Virtual Torch Run by walking, running, riding bikes, training on stationary home fitness equipment to keep the Flame of Hope burning for our Special Olympics North Carolina athletes. Each week, you are asked to log and post your miles on an on-your-honor system and then donate .25 cents a mile.
You can share photos of your efforts wearing your North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run t-shirt or Civitan Tee Shirt on your Facebook page(s) for friends, family and supporters to donate towards your Keep the Hope miles. For more information, go to SONC.org.
And for the athletes, check out the SONC Fit 5 30 Day Challenge. During the month of April, Special Olympics wants you to exercise 5 times a week; eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day; and drink 5 bottles of water each day. Each Wednesday, they offer a video of exercises, health tips and other ways to stay active and healthy at home.
