Junior Civitan’s 1st Ever All In Summit

During the weekend of February 7-10, I had the amazing opportunity to attend Junior Civitan’s first ever All in Summit in Birmingham, Alabama, where Junior Governors and Board Members gathered from across the country and Canada.

After a social on Friday night, we got down to business Saturday doing what Civitans do best; hands-on service projects! We made Autism Awareness ribbons and wrote encouraging notes to individuals and families dealing with Autism. We packed 100 meals for Meals on Wheels, made Valentine’s Day cards for Backpack Buddies, packed field trip snacks for Growing Kings and hygiene bags for the Vineyard Family Services, had an informative session from the Epilepsy Foundation of Alabama and learned about Girls Rock Bham (an organization that teaches young girls leadership skills). Then NCDE Past Governor Maggie Davis shared how to get involved with Campus Civitan at college. And we did one of my favorite activities: cheering the athletes at the Exceptional Foundation where they assist and help people with I/DD’s.

The banquet was held later that evening at the Civitan International Research Center where Director Dr. Craig Powell recognized our fundraising efforts and how these monies will be used.

On Sunday morning, we attended the Governors update meeting where new ideas and projects were discussed. Later, we toured the CIRC and participated in interactive activities. These included using illusion goggles, driving while distracted, recognizing the signs of a child with autism, and holding a human brain while learning about what each part of it does and specific veins and lobes.

It was so incredible to meet and get to know Junior Governors from all over the US and Canada. A huge thank you to the Civitan International staff—Amy Roberts, Emily Kicker, and Scarlet Thompson. Also, thanks to the Alabama Central District—Emily Hodges, Dimple Davis, Lisa Abercrombie—and
Dr. Craig Powell and the CIRC staff for making the inaugural All in Summit in Birmingham so memorable! And a special thank-you to Jr Chair Kimberly Davis for accompanying me on the trip.

But most of all, thanks to NCDE, I was recognized as the All in Summit Top Fundraiser. Not only did I meet my goal of $9,000, but I surpassed it, raising $14,155. Jr. Civitans overall raised $60,679. I know none of this would be possible without the support from NCDE Civitans. I learned quickly that our district is very supportive of our Juniors! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
